Lighting - the face appears to be lit up from both the back right and the front left. If you look, the rightmost cheek, forehead and nose is lighter shaded than the left of the forehead, say. However, when one looks at the ear, the light hits the skin from the opposite direction. The hair also appears to be untouched by lighting and shading. Unity of light source is often key in creating realism, even if, on the original reference, there is some ambiguity.
Shading - a couple spots struck me as over-shaded. Someone already mentioned the hair so I'll pass that by, but the cheek on the left side is very darkly shaded which makes it appear that perhaps she had some very heavy blush there. But even if she was pasted over with make-up there would still be a hint of shaded-lighting there. Deep shadows like this one also imply an indent/hollowish area so it gives that part of her face a sort of gaunt, unreal, sunken feel. The lack of shading or texture on the lips also bothered me a tad. Lips, even when under heavy lipstick, still have texture and slight lighting (especially if there's makeup which tends to reflect better than skin!). Right now, the lips look flat, especially the top.
Finally, the earring. It's an interesting design, but the position of it and ambiguity of what exactly it is (plus the unusual shape) makes it appear as if it's attached to the bottom of the jaw rather than the ear.
Like ~LoloTehWormie said, a thinner pencil lead or strokes might give more control over the detail rather than the pseudo-crosshatch/sketch shading.
Just some thoughts. Good luck drawing.
I have difficulty with drawing hair in a spontanious, natural way.
Greatly appreciated.
When I was a little 'un, they told me to paint what I love when I had no inspiration, and when I was a teen and still none came, thought to paint pretty girls in the meantime. Then Gwyneth occurred...
I've said too much already...
All you gotta do to make art is be an artist, and all you gotta do to be an artist is make art... may sound like a closed loop, but once you're in, you're in.
